- Simple flat percentage discount

Common mistakes to avoid
- Applying two percentage discounts additively — a 20% off followed by 10% off is NOT 30% off; it's 28% off.
- Confusing "% off" with "% of" — 25% off means you pay 75% of the original price.
- Not checking if the discount applies before or after tax — in Canada, HST is applied to the discounted price, not original.
Frequently asked questions
If an item is 20% off and then 10% off, what is the total discount?
Not 30%. The first discount gives you 80% of original; the second takes 10% off that, leaving 72% of original — so 28% total off. This is called stacking discounts and is less favorable than a flat 30%.
How do I calculate the original price from a sale price?
Divide the sale price by (1 - discount%). For example: a $75 item at 25% off came from $75 / 0.75 = $100 original.
What is a good discount percentage for ecommerce?
10-15%: Small incentive. 20-25%: Good conversion booster. 30-50%: Strong promotional event. 60%+: Clearance or loss-leader territory. Research shows 20-30% discounts maximize both conversion and margin.
