Pomodoro Session Planner

Plan your work day with Pomodoro intervals, breaks, and focus blocks.

The Pomodoro Technique divides work into focused 25-minute intervals separated by short breaks. This calculator helps you plan how many pomodoros fit in your available work time, accounting for short and long breaks.

Formula and method

Pomodoros = Available Time / (Pomodoro + Break) with long break every 4

Iterates through available time, placing pomodoros and short breaks, inserting a long break after every 4th pomodoro. Stops when no full pomodoro can fit in remaining time.

Assumptions and limits

  • Classic Pomodoro: 4 short + 1 long break cycle
  • Full pomodoros only (no partial sessions)

This tool provides an educational estimate. Rules, rates and personal circumstances can change the answer. Review the assumptions before relying on a result. Report a correction.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Not protecting pomodoros from interruptions — an interrupted pomodoro must be abandoned and restarted.
  • Using too-long pomodoros — the default 25 minutes works because it creates urgency without exhaustion.
  • Skipping long breaks — the 20-minute long break is essential for sustained all-day performance.

Frequently asked questions

Why are Pomodoros 25 minutes?

Francesco Cirillo chose 25 minutes because research shows concentration peaks at 20-30 minutes before needing recovery. The short break resets focus. This creates sustainable long-day performance vs. exhausting marathon sessions.

Can I change the Pomodoro length?

Yes — many people use 50/10 (deep work) or 90/20 (ultradian rhythm) cycles. The principle holds: focused work followed by deliberate rest. Experiment to find what works for your task type.

How many Pomodoros should I aim for per day?

Research on knowledge workers shows 4-6 hours of truly focused work per day is the realistic maximum. That is roughly 8-12 pomodoros. Planning more leads to diminishing returns and burnout.
