Flooring Calculator

Calculate boxes and cost of hardwood, laminate, or tile flooring.

Flooring comes in boxes covering a fixed square footage each. This calculator determines exactly how many boxes you need plus waste allowance, preventing the common error of running short on installation day.

Formula and method

Boxes = ⌈(Room Sqft × (1 + Waste%)) / Coverage per Box⌉

Rounds up to whole boxes. Waste factor accounts for cuts, mistakes, and future repairs. Always buy from the same dye lot for color consistency.

Assumptions and limits

  • Rectangular room
  • Single-room calculation

This tool provides an educational estimate. Rules, rates and personal circumstances can change the answer. Review the assumptions before relying on a result. Report a correction.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Buying exactly the right amount with no waste — cuts and mistakes require buffer.
  • Ordering from different dye lots if running short — color variation will be visible.
  • Forgetting underlayment — most floating floors require underlayment (separate calculation).

Frequently asked questions

What waste factor should I use for diagonal flooring?

Diagonal layouts require 15-20% waste factor vs 10% for straight. Herringbone patterns can require 20-25% waste due to the complexity of cuts.
