Mulch Calculator
Calculate cubic yards or cubic feet of mulch needed for any garden area.
Getting the right amount of mulch saves multiple trips to the garden center. Too little and weeds break through; too much and you're paying for waste. This calculator handles both bulk cubic yard orders and bagged mulch.
Bulk Volume
1.9 cu yards
- cubic Feet
- 50.0 cu ft
- cubic Yards
- 1.85 cu yards
- bags
- 25 bags of 2 cu ft
- with Waste
- 2.1 cu yards with 10% waste
Formula and method
Volume = Area (sq ft) × Depth (ft); Cubic Yards = Volume / 27
27 cubic feet = 1 cubic yard. 2-cubic-foot bags are the Canadian retail standard. 10% waste factor recommended for irregular beds.

Assumptions and limits
- Uniform depth throughout
- 2 cu ft bags for bagged format
This tool provides an educational estimate. Rules, rates and personal circumstances can change the answer. Review the assumptions before relying on a result. Report a correction.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Applying mulch on top of weeds — they grow through even thick mulch layers.
- Mulching against tree trunks ("volcano mulching") — this traps moisture and causes rot.
- Using too deep a layer (over 4") — this can suffocate roots and create anaerobic conditions.
Frequently asked questions
How deep should I apply mulch?
2-3 inches is ideal for most applications — enough to suppress weeds and retain moisture without suffocating roots. Under trees, keep mulch 6 inches from the trunk. Refresh annually in spring.
