Recipe Scaler
Scale any recipe up or down for any number of servings.
Whether you are cooking for a crowd or halving a recipe for two, this calculator gives you the exact multiplier and scaled amounts for any ingredient in a recipe.

Formula and method
Scaled Amount = Original Amount × (Desired / Original Servings)
Direct proportional scaling. Note that baking (especially leavening agents and salt) does not always scale linearly — use professional judgment for large scaling factors.
Worked examples
Scale up a soup for a crowd
- Original Servings:
- 6
- Desired Servings:
- 24
- Ingredient Amount:
- 3
- Unit:
- cups
Scaled Ingredient: 12.000 cups
Halve a cake recipe
- Original Servings:
- 12
- Desired Servings:
- 6
- Ingredient Amount:
- 2
- Unit:
- cups
Scaled Ingredient: 1.000 cups
Assumptions and limits
- Linear scaling (works best for cooking, approximate for baking)
- All ingredients scale equally
This tool provides an educational estimate. Rules, rates and personal circumstances can change the answer. Review the assumptions before relying on a result. Report a correction.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Scaling leavening agents (baking powder, yeast) linearly for baking — these should be scaled at 75% of the linear amount when doubling or tripling.
- Scaling cooking time proportionally — larger quantities often need longer cook times but not proportionally.
- Scaling pan size without adjusting baking time — a doubled recipe in the same pan bakes differently.
Frequently asked questions
Does everything scale linearly in baking?
No. Spices, salt, leavening agents (baking soda, baking powder), and vanilla scale at 75-80% when doubling or more. Fats and liquids scale linearly. When in doubt, scale conservatively and taste as you go.
